Pharmacy Holds SCD Educational Event

June 30, 2006

This past Monday, the Elephant Pharmacy in San Rafael, CA held an SCD educational event titled "Nutrition: Specific Carbohydrate Diet for IBS." The event description read:

Many of us who have irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease have been told that dietary changes will not help, even though these are disorders of the digestive tract. The Specific Carbohydrate Diet, however, can offer relief to many people struggling with intestinal disorders such as IBS and Crohn's disease. Learn the basics of this diet, and how it can help you or a loved one recover. This diet can also be helpful for autism and even celiac disease (foods are gluten-free).

Emily Bender is a certified nutrition consultant trained at Bauman College in Cotati, CA. She is also a writer, cook, musician and theater artist. Emily loves to work with clients to develop individualized, delicious, realistic and healing nutrition programs that meet their needs. She has personally been helped by the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

Also, a reader of Spokane Washington's daily newspaper, posted this comment on the paper's website:

"I make my own yogurt as part of a specific carbohydrate diet to control my Crohn's disease. For some Crohn's sufferers, eliminating all long-chain sugars and starches from our diet comes as close to curing the disease as we'll ever get. I use the yogurt to make fruit smoothies, raita, mango lassi and some Indian dishes. Combine this with avoiding all wheat, refined sugars, rice and other grains, and I'm nearly symptom-free."
